{"id":1103,"date":"2024-08-31T00:18:41","date_gmt":"2024-08-31T00:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/how-to-use-lilypad-for-customizing-panel-icons-in-gnome-shell\/"},"modified":"2024-12-10T05:06:50","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T05:06:50","slug":"how-to-use-lilypad-for-customizing-panel-icons-in-gnome-shell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/how-to-use-lilypad-for-customizing-panel-icons-in-gnome-shell\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Use Lilypad for Customizing Panel Icons in GNOME Shell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>Just like in Windows where you can minimize taskbar icons, or in macOS where tools like <em>Bartender<\/em> allow you to hide menu bar icons, GNOME Shell has a similar feature.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>A new extension called <em>Lilypad<\/em> for GNOME Shell offers the functionality to hide or display top bar items at your discretion, as well as rearrange their order.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The top panel tends to become cluttered particularly when using multiple GNOME Shell extensions such as a track display for current music, a productivity tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2024\/05\/day-progress-time-tracking-gnome-extension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Day Progress<\/em><\/a>, or a system monitor such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2024\/01\/powerful-system-monitor-gnome-shell-extension\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Astra Monitor<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>This clutter is compounded by traditional tray icons for background applications like <em>Discord<\/em>, <em>Slack<\/em>, <em>Spotify<\/em>, and others, causing a quick buildup of visual clutter.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>But with the <em>Lilypad<\/em> GNOME extension you can bring order the chaos: move the icons and applets you don\u2019t need on view into a collapsable group, then show\/hide them on demand:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Besides, it\u2019s not just applet-addicts who may find <em>Lilypad<\/em> useful.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Ubuntu users may want to use this to bring some visual consistency to the top panel.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Although <em>most<\/em> GNOME extensions that put things in the top panel use monochromatic\/symbolic icons to match the rest of the panel, that uniformity is marred by 3rd-party apps that use colour icons or icons which are smaller\/larger than others, creating a carnival of inconsistency.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Well, with <em>Lilypad<\/em> you can hide those ugly icons out of sight \u2014 <em>without<\/em> losing the ability to use the functionality they provide. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Finally, and most useful, you can use <em>Lilypad<\/em> to rearrange icons in the top bar, putting extensions applets and tray icons in the order you\u2019d prefer. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p><em>\u2014I\u2019m sure some will say \u201cyou shouldn\u2019t run so many things in the first place\u201d, but yeah, well, some people do! And there\u2019s no reason people should remould their workflow to suit someone else\u2019s of idea of \u2018how to use GNOME\u2019 if what works for them, works.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>Get Lilypad<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Install <em>Lilypad<\/em> through the <em>Extensions Manager<\/em> app, then open the extension\u2019s settings window. A window appears showing you a list of active panel icons. Drag and drop to re-order these.
