{"id":233,"date":"2024-01-04T00:08:19","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T00:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/introducing-ai-audio-effects-to-audacity-featuring-voice-transcription\/"},"modified":"2024-12-10T05:11:58","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T05:11:58","slug":"introducing-ai-audio-effects-to-audacity-featuring-voice-transcription","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/introducing-ai-audio-effects-to-audacity-featuring-voice-transcription\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing AI Audio Effects to Audacity: Featuring Voice Transcription"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p>Intel has rolled out a series of AI effects for the open-source sound editor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audacityteam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Audacity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Intel&#8217;s OpenVINO AI plugins for Audacity, as they&#8217;re officially called, are designed to function offline and locally, so there&#8217;s no need for cloud servers, registrations, or subscriptions to use them, you just need sufficiently good hardware!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Among the included are time-saving effects designed for editing spoken word audio, such as podcasts, audio books, and interviews, as well as effects for making\/producing music (further enhancing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2023\/11\/audacity-3-4-audio-editor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Audacity&#8217;s growing DAW capabilities<\/a>):<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Noise Suppression, intended to reduce unwanted noise<\/li>\n<li>Transcription, meant to transcribe or translate words and output to label track<\/li>\n<li>Music Generation, used to create new music from a prompt<\/li>\n<li>Music Style Remix, for generating new music based on existing music<\/li>\n<li>Music Separation, to separate a song into its vocals and instrumentals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/openvinotoolkit\/openvino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OpenVINO<\/a> stands for &#8216;Open Visual Inference and Neural network Optimization&#8217;. It&#8217;s a new, open-source toolkit developed by Intel to run &#8220;AI inference&#8221; tasks &#8220;locally&#8221; on Intel hardware. <\/p>\n<p>The <em>Transcription<\/em> effect is powered by <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ggerganov\/whisper.cpp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Whisper.cpp<\/a>, while the <em>Music Generation<\/em> and <em>Music Style Remix<\/em> use Stable Diffusion and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/riffusion\/riffusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Riffusion<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>These new AI effects sound useful but there is a &#8216;bum note&#8217; to using them on Linux: they have to be manually compiled from source code \u2014 both the OpenVINO AI effects <em>and<\/em> Audacity. No pre-built Linux packages are currently provided.<\/p>\n<p>Helpfully, <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/intel\/openvino-plugins-ai-audacity\/blob\/main\/doc\/build_doc\/linux\/README.md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">OpenVINO has a step-by-step guide<\/a> that walks through the entire build process, start to finish. Better yet, it&#8217;s written against Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (though may work with later versions).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The Linux guide appears to be thorough, but I have not personally tested it. The compilation process necessitates a myriad of dependencies, some of which are several gigabytes in size and would exhaust my inconsistent 3G data. Furthermore, considering how sluggishly my laptop ran the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2023\/12\/geekbench-ml-ai-benchmark-tool-supports-linux\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GeekBench ML benchmark tool<\/a>&#8230; <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>I&#8217;ll leave the rest to you \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Windows users are taken care of with ready-made packages that contain all of the aforementioned OpenVINO AI effects. These can be downloaded from the OpenVINO GitHub releases page.
