Codeberg, a nonprofit platform designed for hosting Free\/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects, has declared a ban on hosting software that is "mostly" generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools. This decision came after a vote that concluded on July 22, 2026, with results showing 358 in favor and 144 against, with a turnout of roughly 50%.<\/p>\n
The ban stems from the increasing financial burden on Codeberg due to the rise of projects primarily created with generative AI, exemplified by a significant hike in their storage costs\u2014from approximately \u20ac700 for solid-state drives (SSDs) a few years ago to about \u20ac3,700 now. In an official blog post, Codeberg highlighted that the boom in AI-generated content threatens to consume their continuous integration\/continuous deployment (CI\/CD) and storage budgets, making it financially unsustainable for a donation-funded service. The organization emphasized its foundational purpose: to facilitate human collaboration on free software rather than hosting one-off, AI-generated projects that lack human input.<\/p>\n
Despite the ban on predominantly AI-generated code, Codeberg clarified that this doesn’t apply to all contributions from AI. The critical term "mostly" allows human-driven projects to still incorporate some level of AI assistance without falling foul of the new rules. Existing active projects will also not be deleted, provided they have a historical context or a stable community. However, repositories that consist entirely of AI-generated content, are built by autonomous agents, or lack sufficient human contribution, will not be allowed.<\/p>\n
This move echoes recent policy changes by Flathub, which aimed to manage the impact of AI-assisted code on volunteer resources. Codeberg’s ban is a direct response to the rising external costs associated with hosting AI-generated code, including the impact on hardware and environmental limitations.<\/p>\n
