A bug that had lingered on Ubuntu\u2019s Launchpad for almost a decade unexpectedly sparked a reunion among former Canonical engineers over the weekend. The bug, marked as invalid, stemmed from user frustration back in 2016 regarding the lack of user documentation for Ubuntu phone and tablet hardware, which they had purchased for \u00a3700.<\/p>\n

The Ubuntu Phone project was discontinued in 2017, leaving this bug unresolved until Adolfo Jayme Barrientos from the Ubuntu bug triage team marked it as invalid. In his comment explaining the status change, Barrientos noted that phone efforts had been transitioned to Ubports<\/a> long ago.<\/p>\n

However, his comment triggered a nostalgia wave among former engineers who had once worked on the project. Chris Wayne, a tech lead in the Phone Delivery Team, humorously remarked on the update, while Marcus Tomlinson, who contributed to building the Scopes framework, revealed he still wasn’t clear on what a "Scope" entailed even though he had created it. The Scopes represented a unique approach, replacing traditional app shortcuts with customizable content pages.<\/p>\n

Former team members used the bug thread to share fond memories of their time at Canonical. Matt Fischer described the gathering as \u201camazing nostalgia,\u201d reminiscing about how the phone\/tablet was his last project at the company.<\/p>\n

Many of the shared memories conveyed warmth, with comments reflecting a sense of camaraderie among those involved. Despite these positive recollections, the bug’s original reporter’s comment echoed the project’s struggles: \u201cI have paid over \u00a3700 to buy Ubuntu branded hardware… and not only is it half finished but no-one bothered to write any user documentation at all?"<\/em> This highlighted the shortcomings that ultimately defined the Ubuntu Phone’s legacy.<\/p>\n

Though the project was deemed unsuccessful in the broader context, it paved the way for other developments. The Snap system emerged from the phone’s Click format, Mir was transformed into a Wayland compositor, and the Ubuntu desktop evolved with a transition to GNOME.<\/p>\n
