The company has introduced the concept of split firmware packages, a feature initially released in Ubuntu 26.04.

The
linux-firmware
package now operates as a meta-package that encompasses various individual firmware packages rather than being a monolithic bundle. While users will continue to receive the complete set of firmware, the underlying structure has changed, allowing for updates on a smaller scale.

The firmware is now divided into 18 vendor-specific sub-packages, such as
linux-firmware-intel-wireless
,
linux-firmware-nvidia-graphics
, and several others tailored for different hardware components. This change means that when there is a minor security patch or bug fix needed, only the relevant sub-package needs to be updated, rather than downloading the entire firmware stack.

The previous configuration bundled many closed-source binary blobs from hardware vendors – essential for the proper functioning of various components like CPUs and network cards on Linux. The introduction of sub-packages means users can uninstall unnecessary firmware to free up space or manage system security better. For example, if certain firmware is not needed for a machine’s current setup, it can be removed without impacting essential functionality.

This redesign is a response to feedback and aims to minimize both the overall download size and the frequency of updates, thus alleviating pressure on Canonical’s update infrastructure. As a result, even users of the previous LTS version, supported with security updates until 2034, can enjoy these benefits of improved firmware management.

Firmware updates in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS have become more efficient thanks to a new approach implemented by Canonical.
