{"id":470,"date":"2024-02-25T18:03:46","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T18:03:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/how-the-gnome-extension-displays-airpods-battery-levels-on-ubuntu\/"},"modified":"2024-12-10T05:01:53","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T05:01:53","slug":"how-the-gnome-extension-displays-airpods-battery-levels-on-ubuntu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/how-the-gnome-extension-displays-airpods-battery-levels-on-ubuntu\/","title":{"rendered":"How the GNOME Extension Displays AirPods Battery Levels on Ubuntu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>Do you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/uk\/airpods\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Apple AirPods<\/a> or Beats wireless headphones with Ubuntu (or any Linux distribution using GNOME Shell) and want to be able to check battery levels on your desktop?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Well, now you can!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The new <em>Airpod Battery Monitor<\/em> GNOME Shell extension makes it easy to check the battery levels of your AirPods or Beats bluetooth headsets.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>Don\u2019t See AirPods Battery Levels in Ubuntu?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Apple&#8217;s wireless audio devices, including <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beats_Electronics\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Beats, an Apple subsidiary<\/a>, function &#8220;out of the box&#8221; in Ubuntu and other Linux distros using the standard Bluetooth stack, but do not display any battery level indication.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Lack of battery level visibility for Bluetooth audio devices in Ubuntu is not uncommon. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can activate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2024\/02\/how-to-enable-bluez-experimental-features-in-ubuntu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experimental Bluez features<\/a> in order to display battery levels of connected Bluetooth audio devices in Settings &gt; Power, as well as through helpful GNOME Shell extensions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2024\/01\/see-bluetooth-battery-levels-ubuntu\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bluetooth Battery Meter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>However, activating Bluez experimental features does not enable the display of AirPod battery levels.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p><em>(Why? Apple\u2019s audio equipment doesn\u2019t report its battery status using the Bluetooth Battery Service (BAS) most audio devices do. The <a href=\"https:\/\/maniacx.github.io\/Airpod-Battery-Monitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">creator of this extension explains<\/a> AirPods instead share battery and model information using BLE advertising packets).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ignore the technical side; if you install the <em>Airpod Battery Monitor<\/em> GNOME Shell extension you will be able <strong>see AirPods battery levels in Ubuntu<\/strong> when paired to\/with the distro.<\/p>\n<p>You will see battery levels for each AirPod (left, right) separately.<\/p>\n<h3>AirPod Battery Meter GNOME Extension<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/airpods-battery-ubuntu.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><figcaption>This extension shows AirPods battery levels<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>As of writing this extension supports:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apple AirPods (all gens)<\/li>\n<li>Apple AirPods Pro (all gens)<\/li>\n<li>Apple AirPods Max<\/li>\n<li>Beats<\/li>\n<li>AirPods wireless charging case<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the extension is compatible with GNOME 43 and above, meaning you can use this on Ubuntu 22.10, 23.04, 23.10 and the latest development builds of 24.04.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Install the <a href=\"https:\/\/extensions.gnome.org\/extension\/6778\/airpod-battery-monitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Airpod Battery Meter <\/em>extension<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect your AirPods to Ubuntu<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Open the extension\u2019s preferences panel<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Select your AirPods model to initiate BLE beacon scanning<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><p>It can take a minute or two for this extension to \u201cdiscover\u201d your AirPods and show their battery information (due to the mechanism for gleaning battery levels).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>From the preferences panel you can choose where\/how battery levels appear:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>As a label in the top bar \u2013 click to see battery info<\/strong>, or:<\/li>\n<li><strong>Icons in the top bar \u2013 battery info shown in Message Tray<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>So yeah \u2013 if you\u2019ve got AirPods, you use them with Ubuntu, and you want to be able to keep an eye on they battery levels, give this extension a go and let me know if it works!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>I can\u2019t test it myself as I don\u2019t own AirPods or Beats devices (my main headphones are wired, and I use a Bluetooth sound bar for everything else \u2013 the screenshots in this post are composites using screenshots shared on the project Github\/GNOME extensions listing).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I recommend using the GNOME Shell Extension Manager desktop app \u2013 it\u2019s in the Ubuntu repos and makes installing, managing, and configuring extensions easier than via a web browser <a href=\"#d7a25692-81f0-4ee0-8fe2-9b40d760a316-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u21a9\ufe0e<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you use Apple AirPods or Beats wireless headphones with Ubuntu (or any Linux distribution using GNOME Shell) and want to be able to check battery levels on your desktop?
