{"id":664,"date":"2024-04-26T00:14:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T00:14:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/step-by-step-guide-enabling-onedrive-file-access-in-ubuntu-24-04-lts\/"},"modified":"2025-03-03T11:40:57","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T11:40:57","slug":"step-by-step-guide-enabling-onedrive-file-access-in-ubuntu-24-04-lts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/step-by-step-guide-enabling-onedrive-file-access-in-ubuntu-24-04-lts\/","title":{"rendered":"Step-by-Step Guide: Enabling OneDrive File Access in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>Among the many new features in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the ability to access your <a href=\"https:\/\/onedrive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft OneDrive<\/a> files through the Nautilus file manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>No 3rd-party app downloads, no dodgy scripts to run, and no paid plans to cough up for because this nifty feature is part of GNOME 46 (and available in any Linux distribution using it, not just the latest Ubuntu LTS).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>OneDrive file access works the same way as the (long-standing and popular) Google Drive integration: a <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.gnome.org\/Projects\/gvfs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gvfs<\/a> backend authorised through GNOME Online Accounts (via the Settings app), and then surfaced as an entry in the Nautilus sidebar.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Once configured you are able to browse, open, edit, move, and copy files to and from your cloud storage as if it was a local folder. There\u2019s no sync or offline support, though.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>I\u2019ve seen some confusion about how to enable this feature so let\u2019s go through it, step-by-step. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>Accessing OneDrive Files in Nautilus<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/which-one-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><p><em>\u201cI don\u2019t see OneDrive listed\u201d, <\/em>people have said.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>When you open the <em>Settings<\/em> app and select <em>Online Accounts<\/em> from the sidebar you\u2019ll see a list of various account types, including 3 Microsoft ones:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Microsoft Personal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Microsoft 365<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Microsoft Exchange<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p><em>Microsoft Personal<\/em> is utilized for e-mail, such as <em>Outlook<\/em>, <em>Live<\/em>, <em>Hotmail<\/em>. You&#8217;ll typically want to use this to authorize desktop email clients like <em>Thunderbird<\/em> and <em>Geary<\/em> to fetch and transmit emails using your Microsoft account.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>To access your OneDrive documents using <em>Nautilus<\/em>, you&#8217;ll need to <strong>select the <em>Microsoft 365<\/em> provider<\/strong> in <em>Online Accounts<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The dialog box that appears may appear complex. There&#8217;s no mention of OneDrive or file access, only fields inquiring for client IDs and issuer data\u2014it might not seem pertinent to normal users.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Microsoft-Online-Accounts-in-Ubuntu.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><figcaption>Ignore everything and click \u201cSign in\u2026\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><p>But don\u2019t panic; ignore ALL of the text fields and options in the dialog.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Yes, really.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Click the \u201cSign in\u201d button without entering anything in any of the fields to open another dialog: <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Click the second <em>Sign In:<\/em> button.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The Microsoft website will open in your default web browser (it can take a few seconds to it to open so don\u2019t fret if nothing happens at first).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Once the web page loads you can log in using your Microsoft account credentials. If you have several accounts be sure to enter the ones that the <em>OneDrive<\/em> files you wish to access are connected to.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/second-sign-in.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">And click \u201cSign In\u2026\u201d again<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Next, you\u2019ll be asked to confirmed you\u2019re trying to \u201csign in to GNOME\u201d. Click the <em>\u201cContinue\u201d <\/em>button to proceed: <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/onedrive-ubuntu-setup-3.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p><p>You <em>are<\/em> trying to sign into GNOME<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>After you click <em>\u201cContinue\u201d<\/em> Firefox will (assuming you\u2019ve not previously authorised it to do so) ask if you wish to allow Microsoft\u2019s sign-in site to open <code>goa-auth2<\/code> links.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Wait a second or so for the<em> \u201cOpen Link\u201d<\/em> button to become clickable then click it:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/onedrive-ubuntu-setup-4.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><figcaption>Click the open link button to complete the authorisation<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><p>The <em>Online Accounts<\/em> window will zip back into focus and, all being well, you will see your Microsoft account details listed in the dialog, along with the Microsoft 365 logo and a toggle to turn <em>Files<\/em> access on and off:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/onedrive-ubuntu-setup-5.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p><figcaption>Success!<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><p>When this toggle is turned on a virtual mount icon with your account name beside it will appear in the sidebar of the <em>Nautilus<\/em> file manager. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>In <em>Nautilus<\/em>, click this new sidebar entry to \u201cmount\u201d your <em>OneDrive<\/em> cloud storage.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can then browse the contents of your OneDrive like it was a regular folder \u2014 albeit with a bit of lag if your network is slow and\/or you have a lot of files up in the cloud:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You won\u2019t see file thumbnails for remote mounts by default. No, not a bug; <em>Nautilus<\/em> is configured to only load thumbnails\/previews for local files. This is because loading previews for remote files can slow things down, increase data usage, and so on.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The \u2018remote server\u2019 icon is your OneDrive mount.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/onedrive-ubuntu-setup-7.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Image Source<\/a><\/p>\n<p><p>You can manually change this behaviour in <em>Nautilus<\/em>\u2018 preferences:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Alas, changing this setting made no difference for me. Image thumbnails still don\u2019t load, not unless I open the relevant file (e.g., view an image in the native Ubuntu image viewer) first. While annoying I don\u2019t consider this a deal breaker.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>And that\u2019s it; you\u2019ve now enabled OneDrive access in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS without needing to download anything else. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h3>Tweaking things<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You may want to tweak the Ubuntu Dock (Settings &gt; Ubuntu Desktop) to hide unmounted drives or hide remote mounts from being shown. If not, get used to having a generic grey server icon taking up space in the dock.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can also use toggle the Files switch in your Microsoft 365 account panel to disable\/enable OneDrive access as and when you need it.
