This could open\/view PDF files, and handle basic PDF editing, like form filling, highlighting, simple annotations, and scribbling on documents with a pen tool.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/editing-pdf-text-onlyoffice-desktop-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ever wanted to edit text in a PDF? Now you can!<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>In ONLYOFFICE 8.1, the PDF app matures into a fully-featured PDF editor, expanding the kinds of annotations and edits which are possible:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Edit PDF text<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Add, rotate, and delete pages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Insert and edit objects (tables, shapes, images, TextArt, <a href=\"#\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">links<\/a>, etc.)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Add text comments with callouts<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Switch between <em>Edit<\/em> and <em>View<\/em> modes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>Although I don\u2019t edit PDF files regularly, these sound like a a solid set of changes. They might not be everyday essentials, but those using ONLYOFFICE will appreciate having them on hand, reducing the need to find, install, and use a separate PDF editor tool.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Elsewhere, ONLYOFFICE\u2019s presentation editor picks up a slate of appreciable changes.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/animation-in-ONLYOFFICE-8.1-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New animation pane in ONLYOFFICE Presentation Editor v8.1<\/a><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><p>A new \u2018Slide Master\u2019 feature makes it easy to apply changes to multiple slides by editing the master slide; the new \u2018Animation Pane\u2019 gives an overview of effects applied to slides via the timeline, and an accompanying side panel surfaces more settings.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Word processing is done in the <em>Document Editor<\/em> which, in this update, boasts a <strong>new toolbar button to quickly switch document mode<\/strong> from <em>Editing<\/em> to <em>Reviewing<\/em> to <em>Viewing<\/em>, depending on what\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Additionally, every component in the suite has been fitted out with new tooltips. These call attention to\/explain new\/updated features added in this update.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/tooltips-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tooltips in ONLYOFFICE 8.1<\/a><figcaption>You won\u2019t miss new functionality thanks to new tooltips<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><p>Other improvements to ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors 8.1 include:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2018Use graphics acceleration\u2019 option in settings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ability to open a file by specifying its name in the terminal (Linux)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated images for error pages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Button to select local file in hyperlink insertion dialog<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Minor menu reordering\/relocations<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated set of colour themes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Support for Serbian (Cyrillic and Latin)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>With new features\/notable changes in specific components:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Configurable format for page numbering<\/strong> (Document)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set page colour<\/strong> (Document)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated paragraph styles, line spacing options<\/strong> (Document)<\/li>\n<li><strong>New algorithm to handle numbers &amp; punctuation in Arabic text<\/strong> (Document)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated media player<\/strong> (Presentation)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Forms now created\/saved as fillable PDF form<\/strong> (Form)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fixed form is inserted without wrapping in front of text<\/strong> (Form)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toolbar button to quickly switch edit mode<\/strong> (Form, Document)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ligature support<\/strong> (Spreadsheet)<\/li>\n<li><code>GETPIVOTDATA<\/code> <strong>&amp;<\/strong> <code>IMPORTRANGE<\/code> <strong>functions<\/strong> (Spreadsheet)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ability to copy\/move sheets between open books<\/strong> (Spreadsheet)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>More details in the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ONLYOFFICE\/DesktopEditors\/blob\/master\/CHANGELOG.md#810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Github changelog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>ONLYOFFICE offers cloud connectivity which, if you\u2019re heavily into the ONLYOFFICE ecosystem, is useful (these editors are available online as well as in standalone apps). But since not everyone needs or wants cloud bobbins, this update lets you hide the \u2018connect to cloud\u2019 screen.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Though fair warning: it\u2019s not exactly \u201cuser-friendly\u201d \u2013 launch the app (from a terminal or by editing the launcher) with the <code>--lock-portals<\/code> flag to hide the \u2018Connect to cloud\u2019 screen. To bring the screen back, launch the app with <code>--unlock-portals<\/code>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>Download ONLYOFFICE 8.0<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>ONLYOFFICE is free, open-source software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onlyoffice.com\/desktop.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">download ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors<\/a> as a DEB package for Ubuntu from the official website or via the GitHub release pages (be sure to unfurl the \u2018assets\u2019 to see the DEB file).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Also, Snap, Flatpak and AppImage builds of ONLYOFFICE are available but, at the time of writing, have not been updated to v8.0 \u2014 keep an eye out for an update.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>This suite is also available as a web-based edition (ONLYOFFICE Docs) but the ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors (to give them their full name) work without any caveats, and don\u2019t require a signup to access, or a login to use.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>If you\u2019re seeking an alternative to LibreOffice that is also free, open-source software, updated regularly, and compatible with Microsoft Office file formats, then ONLYOFFICE is worth checking out (once you get past the SHOUTY name).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p><em>Thanks Tati<\/em><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new version of ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors, a free, open-source, and cross-platform office suite, is now available to download.
