Any users of SoftMaker Office reading this needn\u2019t feel short-changed: the free version comes with fewer features.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The 3 core components in FreeOffice (TextMaker, PlanMaker, and Presentations) are also included in SoftMaker Office, and SoftMaker Office NX (a newer, subscription-based offering with AI integrations) but not all features are shared between them.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>However, all of the essentials one would need <em>are<\/em> present. What\u2019s missing are the gimmicky end of things, e.g., AI\/ML writing\/translation, cloud-based services, access to premium dictionaries, bundled fonts, and the ability to create ePUB files.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>And you will have to put up with lots in in-app links, callouts, and buttons recommending\/promoting the commercial edition \u2014 but hey, it\u2019s free!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>FreeOffice 2024: What\u2019s New?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>What\u2019s new in FreeOffice 2024 compared to the previous release, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/2021\/10\/softmaker-freeoffice-2021-released\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FreeOffice 2021<\/a>?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>New features across all apps include:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Option to use modern ribbons or classic menu and toolbars<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Menus are also accessible in the ribbon user interface<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Quick access toolbar with important functions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Touch mode option for larger icons and increased padding<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>PDF export option to export images in a lower resolution<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018Paste special\u2019 option to include\/remove formatting<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Support for inserting WebP images into documents<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Support for rotating table cells from the Ribbon UI<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>Additionally, new features in <em>Presentation<\/em> take in:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PowerPoint-compatible dynamic slide transitions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Music and videos in presentations can be played on Linux<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Create presentations with embedded fonts on Linux<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Toggle to hide\/show rulers in fullscreen mode<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>The spreadsheet <em>PlanMaker<\/em> adds:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Import and export to SQLite databases.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sort by &amp; filter by colour options<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Set date order when opening CSV files<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Chart titles, axis titles and data labels now fetched dynamically from cells<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pivot tables can be sorted using user-defined lists<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Input line can be enlarged, or made to auto-expand<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>And <em>TextMaker<\/em> adds the following highlights:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Select multiple non-contiguous text ranges using <\/strong><kbd>ctrl<\/kbd><strong> key<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Embed fonts in TMDX and DOCX documents<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Filter paragraph styles by <em>All styles<\/em>, <em>Styles in use<\/em>, or <em>Styles in document<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Now supports numbered lists with leading zeros<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>List numbering can now be right-aligned<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use <code>=rand()<\/code> or <code>=lorem()<\/code> to generate dummy text<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>No features introduced with the SoftMaker Office 2024 service packs (point updates) are included in FreeOffice 2024, from what I can tell. Only core features that shipped in the first commercial release. Alas, this means no dark document backgrounds if dark mode is set.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>Download FreeOffice 2024<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>SoftMaker, the company who make FreeOffice say <em>\u201cno other free Office suite offers such a high level of file compatibility with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The Document Foundation has invested heavily in interoperability with Microsoft Office file formats, and I see enough people praise ONLYOFFICE for its efforts in this area too. FreeOffice has been around for years, gained fans and good reviews, so there may be merit to the claim.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>If you find <em>LibreOffice<\/em> lacking, <em>ONLYOFFICE<\/em> too obtuse, and anything else too niche, you can download FreeOffice 2024 for free for Windows, macOS, and Linux to see if this suite suits your needs better.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can download FreeOffice DEB installer, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freeoffice.com\/en\/service\/tips-and-tricks\/linux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">set up the official APT repo<\/a> to install FreeOffice on Ubuntu and receive future updates (the DEB installer doesn\u2019t do this).
