{"id":905,"date":"2024-07-04T18:02:55","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T18:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/audacious-music-app-shifts-to-gtk3-by-default-introduces-new-plugins\/"},"modified":"2024-12-09T06:23:52","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T06:23:52","slug":"audacious-music-app-shifts-to-gtk3-by-default-introduces-new-plugins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/audacious-music-app-shifts-to-gtk3-by-default-introduces-new-plugins\/","title":{"rendered":"Audacious Music App Shifts to GTK3 by Default, Introduces New Plugins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>A new version of the <em>Audacious<\/em> music player popped out a few weeks back, but I totally missed hearing about it until today (when sifting through my GitHub stars to make sure no other apps I like have joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omgubuntu.co.uk\/tag\/graveyard\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FOSS graveyard<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Audacious 4.4 is a sizeable update which existing fans of this feature-packed, lightweight audio app are sure to appreciate, whether they run it on Linux, macOS, Windows, or a *BSD of some description.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The biggest change? <strong>Audacious now defaults to GTK3 or Qt6<\/strong> (depending on preference). Neither toolkit changes the look of the app but will mean the app works better with modern Linux desktops and technologies, like Wayland.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>GTK 2 and Qt5 support remains available, but only if configured at build-time (so if you need\/want to stick with those you may need to compile this update from source, or find a pre-packaged build providing those options).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p><strong>Wayland support is improved<\/strong> in the GTK version, though the included WinAmp skin doesn\u2019t work well under Wayland. As a workaround, run the player under xWayland instead.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Audacious 4.4 also plays better with PipeWire, by avoiding needless resampling, and using a linear volume scale.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/149366088.v2.pressablecdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/audacious-plugins-1.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New &amp; updated plugins in Audacious 4.4<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Those who enjoy singing along with their favorite tunes will be thrilled to know that this release marks the <strong>return of the lyrics plugin<\/strong> for the GTK interface. It is now configured to retrieve song lyrics from the chartlyrics.com website (if they are available).<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>A <strong>new \u2018Background Music\u2019 plugin<\/strong> has been introduced. When enabled, it can \u2018make the sound equally loud within and between tracks\u2019. How this differs from volume normalization is unclear to me\u2014if you know, please let me know in the comments by clicking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com\/definition\/english\/oo-er\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">oo-er<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The \u2018Song Change\u2019 plugin now allows you to specify a command to run when a song is <em>stopped<\/em>, in addition to simply changing tracks. The \u2018Crossfade\u2019 plugin offers a variety of extra configuration options.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Other changes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/audacious-media-player\/audacious\/releases\/tag\/audacious-4.4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Audacious v4.4 release<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Last.fm scrobbling plugin works again<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Disc Number support<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Option to disable column header sorting<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>ReplayGain values in Opus files can be read from R128 tags<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Quickly mute\/unmute by middle-clicking on volume button<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>New<\/strong> <kbd>shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>enter<\/kbd> <strong>shortcut for Jump-to-Song dialog<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fixed memory leak caused by Opus files with embedded images<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Full stereo separation in OpenMPT plugin<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved handling of MP3 files with multiple image tags<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>In all, a solid update to this long-time staple of the open-source audio scene.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can install Audacious 4.4 on Ubuntu <a href=\"https:\/\/flathub.org\/apps\/org.atheme.audacious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">from Flathub<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/snapcraft.io\/audacious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Snap Store<\/a>, although neither of those builds are \u201cofficial\u201d or \u201cverified\u201d. You can also build it from source.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>If you don\u2019t need any of the improvements covered in this article you can also install Audacious from the Ubuntu repos, using <code>sudo apt install audacious<\/code>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Windows builds are available to <a href=\"https:\/\/audacious-media-player.org\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">download from the Audacious website<\/a>, and work on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11. macOS users will need to get it from <a href=\"https:\/\/brew.sh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Homebrew<\/a> as no standalone package is provided.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new version of the Audacious music player popped out a few weeks back, but I totally missed hearing about it until today (when sifting through my GitHub stars to make sure no other apps I like have joined the FOSS graveyard).
