{"id":925,"date":"2024-07-11T00:11:45","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/introducing-zed-a-gpu-accelerated-ide-built-with-rust-now-available-for-linux-users\/"},"modified":"2024-07-11T00:11:45","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T00:11:45","slug":"introducing-zed-a-gpu-accelerated-ide-built-with-rust-now-available-for-linux-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/serverhost.com\/blog\/introducing-zed-a-gpu-accelerated-ide-built-with-rust-now-available-for-linux-users\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing Zed: A GPU-Accelerated IDE Built with Rust, Now Available for Linux Users"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><strong>Hurrah, the open-source editor <em>Zed<\/em> is now available for Linux.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Zed is a GPL licensed IDE written in Rust by the authors of the (much missed) <em>Atom<\/em> editor and the creators of Tree-sitter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>It offers everything a modern IDE should:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Expansive language support<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Syntax highlighting<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Auto-indent<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Outline view<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Autocomplete<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Real-time collaboration tools<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Integrated terminal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vim mode<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Themes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p><strong><em>Zed<\/em> is GPU-accelerated<\/strong> (by way of the Vulkan API). Combined with the editor\u2019s Rust underpinnings, this editor boasts blazingly fast startup times, can open large files\/projects instantly, and benefits from lower input latency than rival editors, like <em>VS Code<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Plus, as it\u2019s 2024 so AI was made mandatory in all things, <em>Zed<\/em> provides <strong>integration with Github CoPilot and GPT-4<\/strong>. Use this to generate new code from prompting; refactor code generated by GPT\u2019s archaic ancestor (i.e., a human); ask for advice, tips, etc.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Admittedly Zed approaches this integration in a very helpful way. Conversations take place in a special assistant panel, so don\u2019t obscure the main text canvas. For all my scoffing, GPT in a code editor can be useful, though I find more for education than automation.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Because for all the trudge of coding, there\u2019s an innate human factor AI is yet to acquire: ingenuity. As is, GPTs can only suggest <em>working<\/em> solutions to problems if they\u2019ve already been solved, and it\u2019s aware. For everything else, it\u2019s just winging it \u2014 which maybe does qualify it as a proper dev, eh? \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><h2>Download Zed for Linux<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>This Linux version of <em>Zed<\/em> hasn\u2019t emerged entirely unheralded, of course.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Requests for, and development of <em>Zed<\/em> for Linux has been underway for a while, driven in part by the enthusiastic community of Zed users and contributors that\u2019s sprung up since its arrival on the scene in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><p>\u201cZed\u2019s community has been vital to the rapid development of this Linux build. As we\u2019ve discussed before, building a UI toolkit and application for Linux means working with an incredibly variable environment. From your GPU, to your distro, to your window manager, Zed has to handle it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><cite><em>Mikayla Maki, Zed Industries<\/em><\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><p>And yes, in addition to X11, Zed is Wayland compatible too.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>Want to try it out?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>You can install Zed on most major Linux distributions (including Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and above) using the official install script, which is available with a single command:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><pre>curl <a href=\"https:\/\/zed.dev\/install.sh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/zed.dev\/install.sh<\/a> | sh.<\/pre>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The install script only works on 64-bit Intel\/AMD and ARM systems. It does not (currently) support 32-bit CPUs or RISC-V.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>As Zed is open source, <a href=\"https:\/\/zed.dev\/docs\/development\/linux.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">you can install from source<\/a> too. There are also 3rd-party packages available on other distros, including Arch, Nix, Manjaro, and Fedora \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/zed-industries\/zed\/issues\/9922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">no Flatpak or Snap as of writing<\/a>, but lots of folks have asked!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>More <a href=\"https:\/\/zed.dev\/blog\/zed-on-linux\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">details on the Zed blog<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurrah, the open-source editor Zed is now available for Linux.
