Zorin OS 17.3 Launches with Exciting New Default Browser

Zorin OS 17.3 has been released, introducing significant changes, including a new default web browser. This version is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and the Linux kernel 6.8, aiming to improve user privacy and experience.

New Default Web Browser

The most notable change in Zorin OS 17.3 is the shift from Mozilla Firefox to Brave as the default web browser. This decision stems from concerns over Mozilla’s recent policy changes that Zorin OS believes do not align with its privacy standards. Brave is chosen for its open-source nature, comprehensive features, and privacy focus. Zorin OS has modified the Brave browser, hiding some features like Brave Wallet and Brave Rewards to create a cleaner interface. Users who upgrade will retain Firefox unless they perform a fresh installation, while existing users can still install Brave via the software app.

Improved Windows App Handling

In light of Windows 10’s approaching end of life in October, Zorin OS 17.3 enhances its handling of Windows applications. When users try to run a Windows installer, the system now recommends native Linux versions or suitable alternatives. For example, attempting to use the Obsidian Windows installer prompts the Software app to display the native Linux version. If no direct equivalent exists, alternatives like Evince may be suggested instead of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Updates to Zorin Connect

For those using Android devices, Zorin OS’s Zorin Connect app has undergone significant updates. The mobile app now features a redesigned interface that adapts to the theme of Android devices and introduces new capabilities. A standout feature is the ‘gyroscope mouse’, which allows users to control their desktop using their phone’s gyroscope. Other enhancements include improved web link sharing to offline computers and new options for different computer widgets.

Additional Changes

Zorin OS 17.3 includes improvements for touchscreen users, such as better taskbar interaction and an option to summon the on-screen keyboard from a panel icon. The release also includes updated applications and drivers, including support for NVIDIA RTX 5000 series graphics.

Getting Zorin OS 17.3

Current users of Zorin OS 17 can upgrade to 17.3 using the Software Updater. New users can download Zorin OS from its official website, where they can choose between two editions:

  • Zorin OS 17.3 Pro: A paid version offering additional software and support.
  • Zorin OS 17.3 Core: A free version with a simplified application set.

This release marks a solid upgrade for the Ubuntu-based distribution and is poised to attract Windows users seeking a Linux alternative in light of the impending Windows 10 end of life.
