Valve announced the release of Proton 9.0-3 today, marking the latest update to the open-source compatibility layer for Steam Play, which allows Windows-based games to be played on Linux systems. This tool utilizes Wine and other components for seamless game play.
The release of Proton 9.0-3 follows its predecessor, Proton 9.0-2, by over three months. This new version introduces support for a wider array of Windows games, including high-demand titles such as Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (available only on desktop), Ball at Work: The Ultimate Speedrun Platformer!, Banyu Lintar Angin, Dinner with an Owl, Farlight 84, Flatout 3, KinitoPET, and Owl Observatory Demo. Proton 9.0-2 paved the way with similar enhancements.
Additionally, Linux users can now enjoy other titles like Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Super, Sword of Convallaria, Syberia, THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII STEAM EDITION, To Pixelia Demo, Unity of Command II, and Zaccaria Pinball using Proton.
Proton 9.0-3 also addresses various issues experienced in prior versions and fixed regressions that affected the gameplay of Alan Wake’s American Nightmare’s DLC, Bionic Commando, Sonic Forces, GRID Autosport, GRID 2, Noita, and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Many of these games have regained functionality and can now be played on Linux through the updated Proton version, enhancing performance for users who may have faced technical problems previously.
The new Proton release enhances compatibility for a range of pre-supported games, which includes Guild Wars 2, Fallout 3 in both standard and GOTY editions, Yakuza Kiwami, Quantum Break, Yakuza 4 Remastered, Zeepkist, Arcanum, Aimlabs, RAID: World War II, Strip Fighter ZERO, Undecember, IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Blitz Edition, Shady Brook – A Dark Mystery Text Adventure, and Starfield: Creation Kit.
Additional games seeing performance boosts are Halo Infinite, Squad, Three Kingdoms, FINAL FANTASY XII THE ZODIAC AGE, Helldivers 2, Dinogen Online, SCP Secret Laboratory, Burnout Paradise Remastered, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, Project Kunai, One Finger Death Punch, Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit, Spirit Hunter: NG, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, THE FINALS, and Once Human.
Furthermore, Proton 9.0-3 brings support for D3D12 in OpenXR, heightens AVPro video playback in VRChat, rectifies launching issues with EA Desktop and Ubisoft Connect, betters memory management during video play in 32-bit games, and integrates a warning in Proton Log about potential problems on systems with restricted file descriptor limits.
Under the hood, Proton 9.0-3 uses updated components like DXVK 2.4-40-gd0ea5a4a87c9, Wine Mon 9.2.0, vkd3d-proton 2.13-64-g47840a4bb614, and dxvk-nvapi 0.7.1-19-gbd542144518d. For more details about the fixes included in this Proton release, check out the changelog on the project’s GitHub page.
You can enable Proton 9.0-3 for your favorite games by right-clicking on the game in your Steam Library, selecting Preferences, and going to the Compatibility section on the left sidebar. Select version 9.0-3 from the drop-down list and it will be automatically downloaded.
