Today, Kovid Goyal announced the release of Calibre 7.20, the latest version of this free, open-source, and cross-platform ebook management software compatible with Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Key features of Calibre 7.20 include a new default dedicated PDF Input engine that can automatically detect and remove headers and footers through document analysis. The previous PDF Input engine remains available, and users can toggle between the new and old versions in the PDF Input section of the Conversion dialog.
This update also enhances the Kobo driver, adding support for the new firmware for the Tolino Shine 5 ebook reader. Additionally, the Trim image tool has been upgraded with a new feature allowing users to control the aspect ratio of images and improvements have also been made to the Read Aloud feature that enable users to set an extra pause at the end of each sentence when utilizing the Piper TTS engine.
Furthermore, the PDF Output engine in Calibre 7.20 has been refined to support the _WIDTH_PIXELS_ and _HEIGHT_PIXELS_ variables, providing the dimensions of the header/footer area in templates.
In the latest update of Calibre, several bugs were resolved to enhance the content server. It addressed a specific issue that prevented books with non-ASCII filenames from being downloaded via the Kindle browser in /mobile view, as well as a problem that arose when attempting to embed the server HTML within a third-party iframe, which caused an error.
Additionally, Calibre 7.20 has rectified a regression from the last release that hindered users from transferring books to another library if the author of the book wasn’t present in the destination database. It also fixed an issue with the Read Aloud feature’s Piper backend, which had been malfunctioning on Windows systems for voices with non-ASCII character names.
This update introduces new news sources, including the NYT Magazine and RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland. Updates have also been made to existing sources such as National Geographic, Science Journal, The Wire, Nikkei Asia Magazine, Swarajya, Mainichi, Nautilus, Times Literary Supplement, Saechsische Zeitung, India Today, and Scientific American.
