The Tiling Shell GNOME extension has introduced a highly anticipated feature: automatic tiling. This update allows newly opened windows to automatically arrange themselves according to the currently active tiling layout. Users can easily switch between different layouts and even create and save their own configurations.
With this new functionality, windows will snap into the best available slot nearest to the center of the screen, making the workflow significantly smoother. The developer, Domenico Ferraro, emphasizes that this feature eliminates the need for manual window tiling, simplifying user experience even further.
Tiling Shell has always provided various tiling options, from user-friendly features like a slide-in snap assistant to keyboard-driven tiling shortcuts. Now, with the automatic tiling option akin to that found in Pop!_OS, users who prefer this workflow can seamlessly integrate it into their setup.
However, it’s important to note that automatic tiling is turned off by default, giving users the choice to enable or disable it at their discretion via the extension’s preferences menu. There is a suggestion for an easier toggle option to be added in the future.
Tiling Shell is free and open source, compatible with any Linux distribution running GNOME 42 or later, including Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and beyond.
