Mozilla has introduced a new tool for Firefox called the Fakespot Deepfake Detector, designed to help users identify whether the text they encounter online is generated by a human or an AI model. While this detection tool is not flawless, it utilizes Mozilla’s proprietary ApolloDFT engine and various open-source detection models to analyze selected text. Users can highlight at least 30 words and receive an instant assessment regarding the likelihood of the text being AI-generated.
This extension is entirely free to use and aims to provide users with a degree of confidence when reading potentially machine-generated content. According to Mozilla, the tool can quickly indicate if highlighted words display telltale signs of AI authorship.
Currently, the Deepfake Detector is limited to text analysis, although Mozilla has plans for future updates that may include image and video assessment. As the technology behind AI writing evolves, the effectiveness of such detection tools will be tested in an ongoing battle between content creators and AI output.
The need for such a detector stems from a growing concern where AI-generated text may lack the nuance, insight, and creativity that human writers bring to their work. Articles that provide personal experiences and subjective opinions remain particularly valued, as these elements can’t be replicated by AI, regardless of its sophistication.
For those interested in evaluating the authenticity of the online content they consume, the Fakespot Deepfake Detector is available for download on the Firefox Add-ons site.
