Unveiling Darktable 4.6: What’s New in the Latest Open-Source RAW Image Editor Release

Today marks the launch of Darktable 4.6, an updated version of the cross-platform, open-source, and cost-free RAW image editor compatible with GNU/Linux, macOS, and Windows environments.

In Darktable 4.6, there’s a brand-new feature that automatically saves your editing progress every 10 seconds when using the darkroom view. There’s also an additional “rgb primaries” processing module, a tool designed for delicate colour corrections and creative colour grading. Now, the full uncropped view is always visible when you’re working with the liquify and retouch modules.

Another significant addition in this release is a “primaries” section in the “sigmoid” module, designed to handle difficult lighting situations, such as those created by LED lights, and adjust the overall image aesthetic. Furthermore, an image is now displayed in high quality immediately, even while panning or zooming inside the darkroom view.

Darktable 4.6 also offers base camera support for a host of new digital cameras, including Canon EOS Kiss F, Canon EOS Kiss X50, Canon EOS Kiss X90, Canon IXY 220F (dng, chdk), Canon PowerShot SX220 HS (chdk), Fujifilm FinePix SL1000, Fujifilm X-S20 (compressed), ImBack ImB35mm (chdk), Leica M10-D (dng), Leica M10-P (dng), Leica M10-R (dng), Leica M11-P (dng), Leica Q2 Monochrom (dng), Leica SL2 (dng), and Leica SL2-S (dng).

Furthermore, darktable now offers support for a variety of camera models, including Nikon Coolpix A1000 (12bit-uncompressed), Nikon Z f (14bit-compressed), OM System TG-7, various Panasonic models, Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome, Pentax KF, Samsung EK-GN120, Samsung G920F (dng), Samsung G935F (dng), Samsung GX10 (dng), Samsung GX20 (dng), Sigma fp (dng), Sigma fp L (dng), Sigma sd Quattro (dng), Sigma sd Quattro H (dng), Sinar eVolution 75, Sony ILCE-6700, Sony ILCE-7CM2, Sony ILCE-7CR, Sony ILME-FX3, and Sony ZV-E1.

The Darktable 4.6 update also introduces new white balance presets for Leica M (Typ 240), Olympus E-P7, Olympus TG-6, and Sony ILCE-7CM2 cameras. In addition, it adds new noise profiles for Canon IXY 220F, Nikon Z f, Olympus E-P7, Pentax *ist DS, and Sony ILCE-6700 models.

This release also improves exporting speed for JPEG 2000 and B&W TIFF images, increases the image display speed in map view by 25 percent, adds automatic orientation support for importing AVIF/HEIF images, refines AVIF export to ensure no conversion to YUV for lossless images, and implements a new feature to auto-generate thumbnails in the background.

Darktable 4.6 is now available for download from the official website. Check out the release notes for more details about the changes included in this update. Of course, you can also install darktable as a Flatpak app from Flathub.
