Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS Now Ready for Download: What’s New?

The Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS release is now available for download, one week later than originally scheduled. This release serves as the second point release in the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS series and includes a collection of security, bug fixes, and software updates that have been implemented since the previous point release in August 2024.

In addition to these updates, Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS features an updated hardware enablement stack (HWE), which consists of a new Linux kernel (version 6.11) and updated graphics drivers (Mesa 24.2.8). These components have been back-ported from Ubuntu 24.10.

Point releases are designed to refresh the installer image, which reduces the amount of updates that new users must download during installation. They also ensure better hardware support, particularly for newer devices that may not have been available at the time of the original release.

Key features of Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS include:

  • Linux kernel 6.11
  • Mesa 24.2.8
  • libdrm 2.4.122
  • GNOME Shell 46.0
  • LibreOffice 24.2.7
  • Mozilla Firefox 135

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is supported until April 2029 at a minimum, with extended support options available through Ubuntu ESM and/or Ubuntu Pro.

Users can download Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS for various platforms, including desktop and server, directly from the Ubuntu releases page.

Looking ahead, Ubuntu 24.04.3 is scheduled to be released in the summer and will include additional updates along with the Linux kernel 6.14 back-ported from the upcoming Ubuntu 25.04 release.

For those new to Ubuntu, 24.04.2 LTS is now the recommended version for installation.
