Calibre has released version 8.0 of its open-source ebook manager, introducing significant enhancements, particularly in support for Kobo devices. This update allows users to natively edit, view, and convert KEPUB format files, along with automatic EPUB to KEPUB conversion when transferring books to Kobo devices. Additionally, it provides compatibility with the latest Tolino firmware and offers a new feature to suppress author search links within book details.
Noteworthy features also include the ability to adjust multiple items in the Table of Contents and to connect to folders similarly to USBMS-based devices, a useful option for Chromebook users. In this version, Calibre enhances its hierarchical data management by matching prefixes after every period in field completions and updates its macOS application icons to align with Apple’s latest design standards.
Version 8.0 includes numerous bug fixes, such as restoring tabbing functionality in the book list editor when columns are hidden or reordered and resolving issues related to author renaming and the E-book viewer. The catalog generation now supports templates that can access the database for notes, and the full-text search is improved to index text within ZIP and RAR archives. Furthermore, metadata extraction from HTML has been enhanced to recognize name="subject"
meta tags as valid Calibre tags.
The release also improves support for multiple news sources, including Linux Weekly News and the Economist, among others. For a comprehensive list of new features and further details, users can refer to the official release notes and download the updated version from the same source.
