Ubuntu Expands Horizon: Official Support for NVIDIA Jetson AI Modules

Canonical has officially announced support for Ubuntu on NVIDIA Jetson, a line of computing modules designed for AI and machine learning applications. The General Availability (GA) of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS for the NVIDIA Jetson Orin aims to provide optimized performance and compatibility, giving developers a reliable pathway to high-performance AI solutions.

This move aligns with Canonical’s efforts to offer certified images for advanced hardware, which should attract developers interested in utilizing these modules for edge AI, robotics, and various applications. Joe Dulin, VP of Devices Sales at Canonical, emphasized that the collaboration with NVIDIA is a crucial step toward democratizing AI at the edge, combining Ubuntu’s reliability with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing capabilities.

Developers can expect a platform meticulously tailored for the hardware, ensuring it is backed by enterprise-grade security updates, ongoing support, and rigorous QA by Canonical engineers. This focus on stability allows developers to spend more time on innovation and experimentation.

Additionally, Canonical has made Ubuntu Core 24 images available for NVIDIA Jetson. Ubuntu Core is a streamlined, secure version of Ubuntu designed for IoT and edge computing, providing an immutable system that supports over-the-air updates and easy rollbacks. However, pre-built Ubuntu Core 24 images for the NVIDIA Jetson are not currently available; Canonical provides documentation for developers who wish to create custom images.

For a more traditional OS experience, developers can download Ubuntu for NVIDIA Jetson from the official website. The newly certified Ubuntu Server 22.04 images are available for the following modules:

  • Jetson AGX Orin series
  • Jetson Orin Nano series
  • Jetson Orin NX series
