Calibre 8.2 has been officially released by developer Kovid Goyal, introducing significant updates to the popular open-source ebook management software. This new version improves the Kobo driver, ensuring compatibility with the latest Tolino firmware and addressing a prior issue where the Kobo renderer ignored hyphenation and extra CSS additions in KEPUB files.
In addition to the Kobo improvements, Calibre 8.2 includes updates to the Kindle driver. Users can now set the driver to mark all books sent to their Kindle devices as personal documents by selecting a value of * in the Preferences > Output options > MOBI Output settings.
The update also resolves incorrect encoding detection for HTML KEPUB Output in files lacking an encoding declaration. The E-book viewer received enhancements, providing error messages when invalid search expressions are used in the nearby search feature. Moreover, a long-standing bug affecting Quickview’s column syncing with hidden or reordered columns has been fixed.
For macOS users, the release addresses issues when opening book folders or PDF files with titles that include square brackets. Additionally, it rectifies a regression introduced in Calibre 8.1, which caused problems in the E-book viewer related to updating annotations for books containing many annotations.
Calibre 8.2 also enhances several news sources within the application, including The Economist and Reuters. Shortly after the main release, Calibre 8.2.1 was made available to fix an error linked to clicking format links in the Book Details panel.
