4MLinux developer Zbigniew Konojacki has announced the release of 4MLinux 48.0, the latest stable update to this lightweight Linux distribution, which features the JWM window manager. This new version, which comes over four months after the previous 47.0 release, introduces several new applications and components.
Among the notable additions are the Kino IEEE 1394 DV non-linear video editor, the VVenC H.266/VVC encoder included in the codec pack, the FreeTube YouTube client, and the Bristol emulator for various musical instruments. The default software selection also consists of popular applications such as LibreOffice 25.2, GIMP 2.10.38, Mozilla Firefox 137, Google Chrome 135.0, and VLC 3.0.21, among others. Under the hood, 4MLinux 48.0 is powered by Linux kernel 6.12 LTS and employs the Mesa 24.3.3 graphics stack.
Additionally, the server edition of 4MLinux, known as 4MServer, now includes updated core components such as BusyBox 1.36.1, Perl 5.40.0, Python 3.13.1, and Ruby 3.4.1, allowing users to set up a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, MariaDB, PHP) with ease.
For more details, users can visit the release announcement page or download the new 4MLinux 48.0 either as Full or Core editions from the official website. The distribution is currently available only for 64-bit systems, and users are encouraged to upgrade from the previous 47.0 version, which has now been designated as "old stable," while the 46.0 series has reached its end of life.
