Oracle has released VirtualBox 7.1.12, the latest stable version of its open-source virtualization software. This update enhances support for the recently launched Linux kernel 6.16 for both hosts and guests. Released about five weeks after VirtualBox 7.1.10, this new version addresses various user-reported issues and improves several features.
Among the key improvements, the Linux Guest Additions have seen significant enhancements. An issue was resolved that caused VBoxClient to fail during startup when the guest was running a kernel from the Linux 2.6 series or older. Additionally, a warning produced due to an incorrect udev rule was corrected. Furthermore, the command ‘rcvboxadd status-kernel’ has been fixed to report accurate status on systems running kernels from the Linux 3.10 series or earlier.
For Linux hosts, the update fixes a critical kernel panic issue that could arise when using bridged networking with a network interface managed by the ixgbe driver. Other fixes include resolving problems that prevented virtual machines with long names from starting and an issue that triggered Guru Meditation when running nested virtual machines.
Furthermore, this update improves the built-in recording feature, fixing a problem that would prevent a Windows guest from booting when recording was activated in Display settings. The update also introduces support for exposing AVX/AVX2 to the guest when Hyper-V is in use and addresses various other issues related to Windows hosts.
Users can check the release notes for comprehensive details on the new features and fixes provided in VirtualBox 7.1.12, which is available for download as a universal binary installer for any GNU/Linux distribution along with dedicated packages for popular distros.
