Calibre 8.7 Enhances MTP-Based Kindles with New Page Number File Support

Calibre 8.7 has just been released by developer Kovid Goyal, marking the latest stable version of this open-source e-book management software. This version introduces several notable features, most importantly, support for generating page number files (APNX) on MTP-based Kindle devices from 2024 and beyond. Additionally, Calibre 8.7 has improved its ability to ignore the “et al.” suffix when searching for similar e-books by author name.

Alongside these updates, the Kobo driver has been revised to resolve a regression affecting older pre-Touch Kobo devices, ensuring they remain compatible with the software. There are also improvements to the MTP driver, which now includes a workaround for issues where LibMTP fails to return device serial numbers on certain systems.

Other refinements in this update address a previous bug in Calibre 8.6 that disrupted the configuration for transferring books to devices, as well as a flaw concerning the series and publisher mapping rules that mismanaged commas when downloading single book metadata. Furthermore, the Next/Previous buttons in the Text search feature have been corrected.

Visually, the Edit Metadata dialog has been enhanced, stretching multiline fields vertically to maximize space utilization. The update also improves several news sources, benefiting users who rely on those features.

For a complete overview of the changes in Calibre 8.7, users can refer to the release notes and download the latest version from the official website, where binaries for 64-bit and ARM64 Linux systems, as well as versions for macOS and Windows, are readily available.
