In an exciting development for mobile Linux enthusiasts, the UBports Foundation has released the first update to Ubuntu Touch, now based on the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) operating system series. The new release, Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0, brings a host of features aimed at enhancing the user experience, including new logos, an integrated theme switcher, and an experimental personal data encryption feature.
With the encryption option, users can secure their data using a passcode or passphrase. Upon booting, they will interact with a minimal user interface that requires this passcode before granting access to their encrypted personal data, ensuring privacy and security.
Moreover, the update introduces a revamped layout for the Phone app optimized for larger screens, a new USB mode setting that allows internet sharing, and enhanced Bluetooth settings that now display the MAC address. Users may take advantage of a new temporary rotation feature for their screens, as well as an ability to manually rescan for nearby Bluetooth devices.
Several enhancements to the calendar include the ability to set a default reminder sound and options to display various elements like events and week numbers in the Time and Date indicator. Other improvements include the option to disconnect from a wireless display, app management between workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, and enhanced privacy features within the System Settings.
The list of supported devices for this update is extensive, featuring models such as the Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1, Google Pixel 3a, and various Xiaomi devices, among others. Current Ubuntu Touch users can check for the Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 update through the System Settings app. Notably, users on the Stable channel running the previous OTA-10 update will have access to this latest rollout.
