Linux hardware vendor System76 has unveiled a new variant of its Oryx Pro laptop, marking it as the first Linux laptop to ship with the COSMIC desktop environment. This innovative laptop operates on the upcoming Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS distribution, tailored for professionals in engineering, development, machine learning, AI, and gaming.

The Oryx Pro boasts an impressive configuration featuring a 16-inch 2K matte display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 240Hz refresh rate. It is powered by an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU that offers 12 cores, 24 threads, and a boosted clock speed of up to 5.1 GHz. Additionally, it supports up to 96GB of DDR5 RAM, 8TB of M.2 PCIe Gen4 storage, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 graphics.

System76 touts the Oryx Pro as the ideal combination of portability, performance, and visual quality. "The Oryx Pro is back to supercharge your mission: more power, better display, and it will be the first laptop pre-loaded with the new Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS beta,” the company states.

Furthermore, the laptop is equipped with modern connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 6E, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.4, two USB 4 Type-C ports, and various other USB ports along with HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. It also features a multitouch clickpad, backlit keyboard with a numeric keypad, stereo speakers, a 1.0MP HD webcam, and an 80Wh battery.

The pre-installed beta version of Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS includes the COSMIC desktop environment, but users also have the option to buy it with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Customers can configure and purchase the Oryx Pro starting at $2,599 from System76’s online store.
