The Devuan developers have introduced the release of Devuan GNU/Linux 6.0, a complete derivative of Debian GNU/Linux, but without the systemd init system and its associated components. This release is based on the latest Debian 13 “Trixie”, featuring support from the long-term supported Linux 6.12 LTS kernel to enhance hardware compatibility for both new and existing users.
Among the new features, Devuan 6.0 restores support for /run/utmp to register sessions. Notably, it reduces support for the i386 architecture by omitting the i386 installer ISO. Additionally, it incorporates a merged /usr file system, which users must comply with before upgrading from the previous version, Daedalus, as highlighted in the release notes.
Users can now download Devuan GNU/Linux 6.0 “Excalibur” in various formats such as installation, live, netboot, and Docker images from the official website. This version supports multiple architectures, including i386, amd64, armel, armhf, arm64, ppc64el, and riscv64.
The live ISO comes with the latest Xfce 4.20 desktop environment by default. For installations with other desktop environments, users must utilize the "netinstall" ISO for online installations or the "desktop" ISO for offline installations.
Existing users of Devuan GNU/Linux 6.0 “Excalibur” can upgrade their systems directly by following the provided upgrade instructions, with the option to transition from Debian Trixie to Devuan Excalibur.
