Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS Released with New COSMIC Desktop
Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS is now available for download, introducing the first version of the Ubuntu-based Linux distribution featuring System76’s newly developed, Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. This significant milestone follows a lengthy development journey that started in 2021, when System76 announced plans to create COSMIC.
Carl Richell, Founder and CEO of System76, expressed pride in the project’s contribution to the open source community, highlighting that COSMIC is designed to be modular and customizable, allowing users to create their own unique experiences within Linux.
COSMIC (Epoch 1) is more than just a new desktop environment; it’s a versatile platform that provides numerous customization opportunities. Users are encouraged to appreciate COSMIC for what it offers rather than how it compares to more established desktop environments. Some of the notable features include:
- Tiling window management
- Custom workspace arrangements (horizontal or vertical)
- Multi-monitor support with auto-scaling
- Extensive theming options
- A variety of keyboard shortcuts
- Support for creative layouts such as floating panels and stacks
The launch also includes a suite of native COSMIC applications, such as a file manager, a media player, a terminal, a text editor, and a screenshot tool. Users can exert even more control over their applications through the COSMIC Store, which supports installing and updating packages.
Beyond the COSMIC desktop environment, Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS, which is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, utilizes a newer Linux kernel (6.17) and integrates modern graphics drivers. Users benefit from several enhancements, including:
