Linux Mint 22.3 Beta Released: Discover What’s New!

Linux Mint has released the beta version of its upcoming release, Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena.” This marks the final update in the Linux Mint 22 series, building on the previous improvements made in version 22.2 “Zara.” Based on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, Linux Mint 22.3 brings several new features aimed at enhancing the user experience.

Key Features of Linux Mint 22.3

New Mint Menu

The Cinnamon desktop environment has seen a significant upgrade with a revamped Mint Menu. This new menu maintains a three-column layout, with a search bar now positioned at the bottom. It introduces a full-height sidebar displaying user account details, app descriptions, and session action buttons, while ensuring customization options are more extensive than before.

Monochrome Icons

Linux Mint 22.3 adopts the XApp Symbolic Icons (XSI) to replace the previous GNOME symbolic icons, ensuring compatibility and reducing instances of missing or broken icons within applications.

Enhanced System Information App

A revised System Information tool has been introduced, making it simpler for users to access details about their hardware. It features sections for USB devices, the GPU, PCI components, and BIOS information.

Nemo File Manager Updates

The Nemo file manager now supports regex for filename searching and allows users to pause and resume file operations. A dual-pane toggle can now be added to the toolbar for improved file management.

On-Screen Keyboard Overhaul

The on-screen keyboard has been completely redesigned, offering enhanced aesthetics and better functionality, including support for input method switching.

Night Light Improvements

A new Night Light applet allows users to quickly toggle blue-light filtering on and off, along with an option to keep it always enabled.

Workflow Enhancements

Cinnamon 6.6 introduces several workflow optimizations, including app icon badging for notifications, a revamped workspace switcher, and improved handling for keyboard layouts and input methods.

Additional Software Changes

Linux Mint’s default software suite sees minor updates. The Timeshift tool allows users to pause/resume snapshots, while the Warpinator tool supports IPv6 and has been upgraded to handle text messaging.
