A new GNOME Shell extension has been released that alters the app grid, allowing it to scroll vertically instead of the default horizontal layout introduced in GNOME 40. This modification responds to feedback from users who found horizontal scrolling less intuitive, especially when using a vertical mouse scroll wheel.
The extension, called Vertical App Grid, makes it easier to navigate between pages of application shortcuts by scrolling up and down. Users can adjust the size of the app icons and the spacing between them through the extension’s preferences. However, it’s important to note that the extension’s features are basic and currently do not support drag-and-drop reordering or the creation of app folders. Therefore, users will need to arrange their app shortcuts before activating the extension.
This extension may be ideal for those using portrait monitors or a vertically stacked multi-monitor setup. While it provides an alternative scrolling method, it may not suit everyone’s workflow, particularly users accustomed to the conventional horizontal layout.
