Firefox 147 Has Arrived: Discover the Latest Features and Updates!

Mozilla has released the final builds of Firefox 147, available for download ahead of its official unveiling on January 13, 2026. This latest version of the open-source web browser comes with a host of new features and improvements designed to enhance user experience.

One of the significant updates in Firefox 147 is its improved rendering on fractionally scaled displays when using the GNOME/Mutter environment. This enhancement ensures that content looks sharper, as the window and rendering surface sizes have been adjusted to align with the pixel grid.

Firefox 147 also introduces support for Freedesktop.org’s XDG Base Directory Specification, zero-copy hardware-decoded video support on AMD GPUs for better video playback, the Safe Browsing V5 protocol, and WebGPU compatibility for Apple Silicon Macs.

For Linux users, the adjustments to rendering enhance the overall visual experience, particularly for those on high-resolution displays. Additionally, the new version enables Compression Dictionaries as per IETF RFC 9842, which reduces the data transferred while loading web pages, benefiting users with slower internet connections.

Another notable feature is the automatic opening of a Picture-in-Picture player window when a video is playing in a background tab, a functionality that was previously only available in Firefox Labs and is now accessible to all users.

The Tabs settings have been reorganized into three clearer categories: Opening, Interaction, and Closing, making it easier for newcomers to navigate. Furthermore, a new Profiles section has been introduced under General settings to help users manage different browsing profiles, which can separate personal and work sessions.

Mozilla has also incorporated experimental features aimed at enhancing productivity, such as "Lists and timer on Firefox Home," designed to help users stay focused.

Firefox 147 improves security as well, with Android users benefiting from enhanced protection against side-channel attacks by enabling Site Isolation by default. For Windows users, compatibility with certain monitors has been improved.

From a development perspective, Firefox 147 supports various web technologies, including the Navigation API, and has added features that align with modern web app standards.

Mozilla plans to officially release Firefox 147, along with Firefox 140.7 and 115.32.0 ESR, on January 13, 2026. However, users can download the source tarball and binaries for different systems immediately from Mozilla’s FTP server.
