Wine Updates: Now Run Newer Versions of Adobe Photoshop on Linux!

The absence of Adobe’s creative software suite on Linux often discourages users from embracing the operating system fully. Although you can run older versions of Photoshop on Linux via Wine, such as Photoshop CS6, newer versions of the Creative Cloud require a bit more effort. Previously, users had to install Photoshop on a Windows system, typically via a virtual machine, and then transfer the necessary files to their Linux Wine environment.

However, recent developments have seen a set of patches submitted to Wine that enable the Adobe Creative Cloud installer to function on Linux, allowing for the installation of Photoshop versions 2021 and 2025. These modifications came from a developer known as PhialsBasement, who worked on making the installer compatible with Linux systems by addressing issues with XML data handling.

While this news is promising, it is important to note that installing and running Adobe Photoshop on Linux may yield varying performance outcomes. Anecdotal reports suggest that Photoshop 2021 runs smoothly, whereas experiences with Photoshop 2025 tend to be less consistent.

Currently, the patches are not included in the official Wine release, meaning users will need to compile Wine from source to test the new features. Those interested can find the necessary source code on GitHub.

For many, the idea of purchasing a Creative Cloud subscription for Linux might not be appealing. Fortunately, there are numerous free open-source alternatives to Photoshop available, such as GIMP, Krita, and Pinta, as well as online options like Photopea and Canva that function under Wine.

As Linux continues to grow more capable, innovative solutions like these diminish the arguments against switching from Windows, especially with many users seeking alternatives as Microsoft phases out support for Windows 10.
