The MX Linux team has released version 25.1, marking the first update in the MX Linux 25 "Infinity" series. This version is based on Debian 13.3 and includes both systemd and SysVinit, allowing users the flexibility to choose their preferred init system from the live boot menu.
MX Linux 25.1 comes after a week-long beta testing phase and features the long-term supported Linux 6.18 LTS kernel on the Advanced Hardware Support (AHS) ISOs, while the standard ISOs utilize Linux 6.12 LTS. One of the standout features of this release is the inclusion of dual-init support, a significant upgrade from the previous version, which required separate ISOs for systemd and SysVinit.
However, users who installed the previous version with a specific init system will need to perform a fresh installation to switch to a different init system after upgrading to version 25.1. The team has acknowledged an issue with the live USB operation in dual-init mode, where semi-automatic persistence saving is temporarily unavailable, although it will automatically fallback to standard persistence saving configurations.
This latest release allows for more flexibility and reflects the MX Linux team’s commitment to user accessibility, aiming to improve the overall experience for users. Download links for different versions of MX Linux 25.1, including flavors with Xfce, KDE Plasma, and Fluxbox, are available, alongside instructions for upgrading existing installations via terminal commands.
