Firefox Introduces AI Kill Switch in Nightly Build, Set to Launch with Firefox 148

Mozilla has introduced the long-awaited AI Kill Switch feature in Firefox. This allows users to disable all AI-driven functionalities within the browser effectively. This functionality is currently available for testing in the latest Firefox Nightly update.

Back in December 2025, the newly appointed CEO of Mozilla announced plans for an AI kill switch, aiming to assuage concerns from users who felt that the integration of AI features was becoming overwhelming. The AI kill switch provides an option titled “Block AI Enhancements” located in a dedicated section of the browser’s settings. By toggling this setting, users can disable various AI features, effectively removing any associated pop-ups and notifications.

When activated, users will receive a notification detailing which AI functionalities have been disabled. This includes features such as language translations, PDF viewer image descriptions, tab grouping suggestions, highlights in link previews, and AI chatbots present in the sidebar. Any add-ons utilizing these disabled AI functionalities will also be blocked.

Moreover, users can later re-enable specific AI features selectively without having to disengage the entire AI control. They can also manage which AI chatbot, if any, should be enabled in the sidebar.

To access the AI Controls before the full launch, users must adjust a specific setting in Firefox Nightly by changing the browser.preferences.aiControls option from false to true. The complete AI Kill Switch feature is expected to be released to all users with the upcoming Firefox 148, targeted for launch on February 24, 2026.

In addition to the AI-focused updates, Firefox 148 is set to enhance its support for screen readers, incorporate WebGPU support for service workers, introduce the Sanitizer API for better HTML management, and implement the Trusted Types API to prevent cross-site scripting vulnerabilities.
