Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS has been released, marking its fourth point release since the initial launch in April 2024. This update, named ‘Noble Numbat’, includes all security, bug, and software updates since the previous release, 24.04.3, which came out in August 2025.
One of the main highlights of this update is the new hardware enablement stack, featuring Linux kernel 6.17 and Mesa 25.2.8. These updates have been back-ported from Ubuntu 25.10, meaning they are available for install on existing Ubuntu 24.04 systems without needing a fresh installation.
Additionally, the HWE package for 24.04.4 includes updated Wayland protocols, enhancing compatibility with new software that utilizes the Wayland display server. While these updates aim to improve performance and compatibility with newer hardware, users who have kept their systems updated will not notice significant changes, as these updates have already been rolled out gradually over the preceding months.
Key packages updated in Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS include:
- Linux kernel 6.17
- Mesa 25.2.8
- Snapd 2.73
- LibreOffice 25.8.4
- Mozilla Firefox 147 (snap; auto-updates to newer)
The primary goal of point releases is to ensure that long-term support (LTS) releases remain functional on newer hardware that may not have been available during the original ISO creation. Hence, existing users running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS do not need to download the new ISO unless they want to install it on a new system.
If you currently have Ubuntu 24.04 LTS installed but do not see “24.04.4 LTS” in your system settings, you can easily resolve this by:
- Opening Software Updater
- Installing the
base-filesupdate, which modifies the version number displayed throughout the system.
Downloading Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
You can download Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS for various devices, including desktop, Raspberry Pi, and server, from the Ubuntu releases page or through the main Ubuntu download page.
Support for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS lasts until April 2029. Users can opt-in for additional security coverage for another five years by signing up for a free Ubuntu Pro account. Canonical also provides businesses with an option to pay for an extra five years of support beyond the standard duration, amounting to a total of fifteen years of LTS support.
The next point release, 24.04.5 LTS, will finalize the HWE updates by back-porting the latest kernel and graphics driver stack from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Long-term support versions of Ubuntu receive support for a minimum of five years, with periodic point releases during the first three years to refresh the installation media.
