Nitrux 6.0 has been released, marking a significant update to this Debian-based, systemd-free, and immutable GNU/Linux distribution. The new version boasts the latest Linux 6.19 kernel with CachyOS patches, allowing for enhanced performance and stability.
One of the standout features in Nitrux 6.0 is its default inclusion of the Hyprland 0.53.3 dynamic tiling Wayland compositor, which brings updated utilities such as Hyprlock and Hyprpaper among others. A modern, lightweight Wayland-native login screen named QMLGreet has also been introduced. Additionally, users will benefit from a QML-based on-screen display for keyboard shortcuts and notifications referred to as NudgeOSD.
Nitrux also launches VxM, a hypervisor orchestration utility that utilizes VFIO PCI passthrough for IOMMU isolation. This feature allows discrete graphic resources to be dedicated to guest domains, enhancing performance by granting the guest OS direct hardware access, avoiding virtualization overhead.
The Nitrux Update Tool System (NUTS) has been updated for better transaction integrity, supporting atomic updates, XFS for compressed system snapshots, and cryptographically verified metadata for added security.
Another major feature is the Nitrux Rescue Mode, which provides an automated recovery mechanism to restore the system to a known good state without needing external media. This mode can regenerate the bootloader configuration automatically to ensure system bootability post-rollback.
In terms of compatibility enhancements, Nitrux 6.0 also adds an “Intel Xe Mode” entry to the GRUB bootloader, integrating support for the new Intel xe driver for specific Intel iGPUs and Arc GPUs. Furthermore, a blue light filter utility named Hyprsunset is included to improve user comfort during prolonged screen use.
This release addresses several bugs and brings various components up to date with their latest versions. Nitrux 6.0 can be downloaded as live ISO images compatible with 64-bit systems, available in separate flavors for Intel/AMD and NVIDIA.
