Ubuntu’s New Folder Icons: A Design Update That Will Spark Debate

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is undergoing a major visual update with the introduction of new folder icons that feature a squatter shape and a vibrant design. These redesigned icons are part of a series of changes in the daily builds of Ubuntu 26.04 ‘Resolute Raccoon.’

Alongside the folder icons, other changes include the restyled icons for the LibreOffice applications, new symbols for accessibility features, and an adaptive icon for the Calculator. The Yaru theme is also being adjusted to align more closely with the style of the GNOME Shell and Adwaita.

The new folder icons are particularly noticeable, significantly differing from the previous taller designs. The updated icons boast curves and a depth-enhancing emboss, giving rise to an engraved look for folder emblems. For instance, the Desktop folder icon has shifted to reflect a traditional folder design instead of resembling a desktop.

Moreover, the method that color reflects system accent choices has been revamped: rather than just tinting, the entire folder adopts the chosen color. Similarly, other icons, such as the Calculator and LibreOffice suite, have been updated to align better with the Yaru style.

The changes extend to the GNOME Shell theme as well, reducing the maintenance burden on Yaru’s developers while enhancing visual contrast throughout the user interface. The Ubuntu Dock now has an opaque background to improve legibility against various wallpapers, among other adjustments.

While some users may welcome these updates, others may express strong opinions regarding the changes, reflecting the diverse user preferences in the Ubuntu community. The overall intent behind these visual tweaks is to simplify maintenance and better integrate with upstream design choices without sacrificing user experience.
