GNOME 50 Released with New Features
GNOME 50, codenamed “Tokyo,” has officially launched, introducing a host of new features to this popular open-source desktop environment used by Ubuntu. This release enhances user experience significantly with several updates.
Key Features of GNOME 50:

Variable Refresh Rate and Fractional Scaling
- Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is now supported by default on compatible monitors, which means displays can adapt the refresh rate based on content, whether it’s static or fast-moving. This change improves responsiveness during activities like gaming and scrolling.
- Additionally, fractional scaling allows for better handling of high-DPI displays without requiring users to tweak settings manually.

Power Profile Indicator
- A new icon in the top panel alerts users when they switch power modes, helping to remind them when they are in low or high power modes.

Document Viewer Enhancements
- The Document Viewer, now referred to as Papers, introduces new tools for drawing, adding text annotations, and freely filling in PDF forms. An eraser tool is also included for corrections.

File Manager Improvements
- While there are no groundbreaking features in the file manager, performance tweaks and improved memory usage enhance the overall user experience. The batch rename function now highlights text changes for better clarity.

Expanded Parental Controls
- The latest update brings more robust parental controls, enabling parents to set daily screen time and bedtime limits for children. Notifications will inform users when their limits are approaching.

Accessibility Features
- Accessibility has been improved with a revamped Orca screen reader and a new Reduced Motion setting that minimizes UI animations for those who may find them distracting.

Remote Desktop GPU Acceleration
- Hardware acceleration for remote desktop sessions is now a part of GNOME 50, which should lead to smoother and more responsive remote connections.
Additional Changes:
- Several community applications received recognition as GNOME Circle apps, highlighting best-in-class tools such as screenshot annotation tools and media compressors.
- Various tweaks in the Settings utility, expanded features in the Calendar, and improvements for hybrid graphics laptops have also been introduced.
Availability
GNOME 50 will be included in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, set to release in April 2026. Users of current stable Ubuntu versions will not be able to upgrade to GNOME 50 without significant effort. For eager users, a GNOME OS image is available to run in the GNOME Boxes application.
