Canonical has recently undertaken a significant redesign of Launchpad, the platform central to Ubuntu development. Although the homepage was last updated in 2024, many functional pages had not seen any updates for nearly a decade.
Enzo Deng, a UX designer at Canonical, announced the initiation of a complete redesign for the series page used in Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. This revamp is seen as a pivotal step toward modernizing the overall user experience on the Launchpad platform. While there’s acknowledgment from Canonical that the previous interface has caused some friction for contributors, specific details on the issues addressed remain sparse.
The new design promises not just a fresh look but also aims to make user tasks more efficient. Enhanced visual density and improved layout now prominently display critical information regarding bugs, milestones, and package uploads. However, these changes primarily benefit developers and package maintainers—average users will likely not notice the difference.
Deng mentioned that the series page improvements represent just the beginning of a wider initiative to overhaul the entire Launchpad web application. For those who wish to see the updates firsthand, the new series page design is available at launchpad.net/ubuntu/resolute. While the initial focus is on Ubuntu 26.04, all series pages for previous releases have also been updated with the new look.
Historically, Launchpad has not been a major hub for open-source projects relative to other platforms like Git, largely due to Canonical’s earlier commitment to the Bazaar version control system—a decision that it reversed the previous year.
