Canonical Steps In: Taking Over Flutter Desktop Maintenance

Google has announced at the Google I/O 2026 event that Canonical will now serve as the lead maintainer and ‘strategic steward’ for Flutter desktop across Windows, macOS, and Linux. This development follows a strengthened partnership between Google and Canonical, highlighted by Kate Lovett, Engineer Manager at Google, who stated that the Flutter desktop experience has significantly matured due to Canonical’s expertise.

Since 2021, Canonical has made Flutter its primary choice for developing applications on Ubuntu, producing various Flutter-based software such as the App Center, Firmware Updater, and Security Center. As the new maintainer, Canonical will take charge of the Flutter desktop maintenance and its future roadmap, marking a pivotal step towards expanded governance for the Flutter project.

In addition to this major announcement, the Google I/O 2026 presentation unveiled new features for Flutter desktop, including support for tooltips and content-sized views. Developers can now create additional windows and dialogs, allowing for the development of complex multi-window applications that offer a native feel on all supported platforms.

Moreover, Google has transitioned its Material and Cupertino design libraries into standalone packages, ensuring that updates to the Flutter framework won’t impose breaking changes on developers. Foundational classes like Listenable will also be available as Dart packages, catering to the wider Dart community without the need to draw in the entire Flutter SDK.

Despite shifts in priorities within the Flutter team, as indicated by recent layoffs, Google remains committed to the platform. By entrusting Canonical with stewardship of Flutter desktop, Google is ensuring that Flutter continues to thrive under a more collaborative governance model.
