Proton Drive Client Finally Launches for Linux Users!

Proton has announced that it is developing a Proton Drive client for Linux desktops, as part of a broader update to its platform. The new client will be built using a shared SDK, which unifies the codebase across all official Proton apps, simplifying future enhancements and integrations.

This development follows Proton’s previous support for Linux users through its VPN service, although the VPN desktop GUI was only launched in late 2023. Other Proton services like Proton Pass and Proton Mail also made their Linux desktop debut in 2024, along with a two-factor authentication app in 2025. While Proton had hinted at a Linux client earlier this year, this latest update confirms that active development is underway, though specific release dates have not been provided.

Proton Drive began its journey with a desktop client for Windows in July 2023, followed by a macOS client in November. Until now, Linux users have only had access to a web app. The forthcoming client aims to enhance user experience by utilizing the new SDK, which offers significant improvements in speed: uploads can be up to three times faster, downloads may reach double the speed, and file encryption could process up to four times quicker.

While many Linux users rely on available cloud storage solutions, the arrival of an official Proton Drive client signals an expanding support for Linux environments. Proton Drive offers 5 GB of free encrypted cloud storage and various paid plans that increase storage capacity significantly.

For those interested, the SDK is available on GitHub, although it is currently not production-ready for third-party applications.
