LibreOffice Enhances Ribbon-Style UI with a Vibrant Color Update

LibreOffice is set to introduce a vibrant update to its Tabbed UI, also known as the Notebookbar, in its upcoming major release, LibreOffice 26.8, scheduled for August 2026. This new feature allows users to customize the background color of the Tabbed UI when the application theming is enabled through the Tools > Options > Appearance menu.

By default, the Tabbed UI will showcase a blue background, but users can select any color of their choice. The customization process involves selecting a specific Notebookbar type—such as Writer, Calc, Impress, or Data—and then choosing a preferred color from a dropdown menu. The background color change will also reflect in the Tabbed Compact mode, albeit in a subtler manner due to its narrower design.

While the designers shared a preview of the updated backdrops, initial tests on a nightly build of LibreOffice 26.8 showed some visual inconsistencies, such as a thin border around the tabbed UI area. This is expected as the software is actively being developed, leaving room for changes and enhancements over the next few months.

It’s important to note that the Tabbed UI mode is not enabled by default. For users seeking to revitalize their toolbar experience, this new feature could be an appealing option once the stable version is released.

In the meantime, those eager to explore the changes before the official launch can download a nightly build of LibreOffice 26.8 for Windows or Linux from the project’s build server. The updates are also anticipated to include various other noteworthy features, signifying a competitive edge in the open-source office suite market.
