A recent update for System76’s COSMIC desktop has introduced a new system monitoring tool along with various fixes and enhancements. The release, labeled COSMIC Epoch 1.1.0, marks a continued effort by developers to increment minor version updates to facilitate mid-release patches, should they be necessary.
The highlight of this update is the COSMIC Monitor, a native system monitoring application developed with the same Iced toolkit as the desktop’s core apps. COSMIC Monitor will replace the GTK-based GNOME System Monitor in the upcoming Pop!_OS 24.04 release, although users will still have the option to install and use the latter.
In this update, numerous bug fixes and refinements have been made, including improvements to cosmic-comp, which now prevents gradual slowdowns and increased CPU usage during extended sessions. The COSMIC Files application features enhanced sorting iconography, allowing for better user differentiation between file types, and improved navigation with page up and down key functionality.
Additionally, new icons for various file types, including PDFs and executables, have been added for further clarity. The update also addresses issues with the on-screen display not appearing correctly, improved handling of non-file URLs during OpenVPN imports, and enhanced organization in the screencast dialog.
Users can access COSMIC Epoch 1.1.0 now via GitHub. Those on the Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS will receive these updates automatically, consolidating version rolls for easier package management. The unofficial COMSIC PPA for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will be updated shortly.
