Ubuntu 26.10 Phases Out dbus-daemon After 22 Years as the Default Component

Ubuntu 26.10 is set to replace its long-standing D-Bus implementation, dbus-daemon, with dbus-broker, marking a significant change after 22 years. D-Bus serves as a message bus facilitating communication between processes on the desktop and the system, which impacts various functions like app notifications and hardware interactions.

While the transition to dbus-broker means improvements in message handling and efficiency—such as preventing message loss under heavy load and speeding up target lookups—users are not expected to notice any significant differences. Canonical assures that applications and desktop environments will continue to operate as before, thanks to shared protocols and configurations between the two bus systems.

The changeover was delayed due to policies preventing the simultaneous presence of two similar packages in the main repository and dependencies that needed adjustment. However, as these roadblocks have been resolved, Ubuntu 26.10 will debut dbus-broker as the standard option.

For those interested in trying out dbus-broker immediately, it can be manually installed on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS by entering the command:

sudo apt install dbus-broker

Once installed, users can verify its active status with:

systemctl status dbus-broker

If any issues arise, reverting back to dbus-daemon is possible by disabling dbus-broker.

Overall, while the backend improvements are notable, the average user may not perceive any visible change in their daily interactions with the system.
