Firefox Accelerates Update Pace: New Releases Coming Twice as Fast from September!

Mozilla is set to expedite Firefox’s release cycle, transitioning to a new schedule in September that will see stable versions launched every two weeks instead of the traditional monthly release. This shift, according to Mozilla, aims to enhance predictability and provide users with more frequent updates for features that are ready to be shipped.

The last version to follow the current schedule will be Firefox 154, slated for release on August 18. Following this, Firefox 155 will arrive on September 1, marking the start of the accelerated release pattern.

Despite the increased frequency of updates, Mozilla emphasizes that its developers won’t be pressured to complete work more quickly. Features that aren’t ready will remain in development until they’re fully prepared for deployment. This change is anticipated to help Firefox remain competitive against other browsers, particularly Chromium-based ones like Google Chrome, which already follows a similar bi-weekly update model.

For existing users, there will be no additional steps required to keep up with the new schedule, as updates will be delivered through the existing channels they currently use. Mozilla has also confirmed that its Extended Support Release (ESR) version of Firefox will still maintain its slower update pace. The ESR will continue to receive regular security updates, allowing users to enjoy stability and safety.

While Mozilla is committed to this new release approach, it will closely monitor the results of this adjustment and retain the flexibility to make changes as needed. The efficacy and reception of this faster cycle will ultimately determine if it becomes a long-term strategy for the browser.
