Introducing Firefox’s AI-Powered Daily Crossword Widget on the New Tab Page
Firefox has introduced an exciting new feature on its New Tab page: an AI-powered daily crossword widget, created in collaboration with the AI news reader, Particle. This mini game is refreshed each day with puzzles inspired by the latest news articles that Particle summarizes, providing a fun and engaging interactive experience.
To play, users click on a square to reveal a corresponding row or column, shift between “Across” and “Down,” and enter their answers based on the clues provided. Should they encounter difficulties, there’s a hint button available for assistance.
For those interested in trying the crossword, it can also be accessed via a direct link in any browser. Though it may appear that Mozilla is aiming to tap into the gaming trend following Wordle, this move is part of a broader strategy to transform the Firefox New Tab page into a more engaging destination rather than just a gateway for searches.
The crossword, tentatively named the ‘Daily Grind’, is just one of multiple widgets being rolled out, alongside a to-do list, timer, stock checker, world clock, a new weather widget, and a daily photo feature. During major events like the World Cup 2026, users can expect real-time match updates and scores.
Users will have the flexibility to customize these widgets: they can resize, reposition, or disable any that they do not wish to use. Additionally, there is an option to minimize the amount of visible widgets to allow room for sponsored content.
As for availability, Mozilla is gradually rolling out this feature, and some users may already have access. It’s important to note that Mozilla frequently tests new features with select users before making them broadly available.
For those who don’t see the new widgets yet but want to enable them manually, they can do so in Firefox 153 and later from the about:config page by adjusting specific settings.
While there isn’t a specific date for the full rollout, ongoing updates and the regular two-week release cycle could mean that these features become widely available sooner than later.
