Introducing Mosaic: The i3-Style Auto-Tiling Extension for GNOME Shell

Mosaic is a new i3-style auto-tiling extension for GNOME Shell that introduces a versatile way to manage your window layout. This extension allows users to toggle between an auto-tiling mode and a traditional floating window mode, offering flexibility depending on the user’s needs.

Available for GNOME 45 and later, Mosaic adds a quick toggle in the Quick Settings, enabling instant switching between the two modes. While in auto-tiling mode, new windows automatically arrange themselves using a tree-based approach inspired by i3, enhancing productivity and organization.

In addition to its drag-and-drop simplicity, Mosaic includes various keyboard shortcuts for advanced window management. For instance, you can press Super + Return to enter window management mode and utilize shortcuts to adjust window orientation, resize windows, and switch focus between them. In floating mode, functionality remains, but users may notice less fluidity when moving windows.

Originally a fork from System76’s Pop Shell, which has transitioned to the COSMIC desktop, Mosaic provides an uncomplicated alternative to more complex tiling extensions. It emphasizes simplicity and user-friendly design, focusing on minimal configuration.
