Orion for Linux Beta Update: Introducing Private Browsing and Link Previews
Kagi has launched a new beta version of Orion for Linux, enhancing its WebKitGTK-based browser, initially introduced for macOS and iOS. The latest release, v0.4.1, builds upon the earlier v0.3.0, incorporating additional features and refinements similar to those found in its other platforms.
Among the new additions are the capability for private browsing and a basic download manager, alongside a toolbar overflow menu. This feature organizes buttons, keeping them accessible without cluttering the interface.
Another noteworthy addition is the link preview feature, which allows users to see a summary of a webpage by hovering over a link without opening it in a new tab. Currently, this preview can be accessed via right-clicking, though shortcuts available to macOS users are not yet implemented.
The beta also introduces Programmable Buttons, enabling customization of the toolbar with actionable buttons that can execute code or conditions on web pages. Users can create or import these buttons for quick access.
Local synchronization support allows users to export key data as a file for easy transfers between builds, although Kagi plans to implement a cloud syncing option in the future.
Many smaller enhancements have been added as well, including improved browser shortcuts, a renamed sidebar, password management options, and increased functionality for site settings—allowing users to block web fonts and manage cookies.
To install Orion for Linux, users can now access it as a Flatpak, although it is not available on Flathub. Kagi has created its own repository for this. For users who already use Flatpak, they can easily add the new repository and install the browser with simple commands.
Despite these advancements, Kagi emphasizes that this is still a beta version, cautioning users about potential bugs and incomplete features. Feedback can be provided through the Orion feedback site, as the developers continue to refine the user experience.
