LibreOffice 26.8 Released: New Paragraph Layout Changes, Draft View, and More!

The Document Foundation has introduced LibreOffice 26.8, a significant upgrade to its open-source office suite that is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux. This release features an advanced Paragraph Composer, which optimizes the layout of justified text in Writer. Instead of adjusting one line at a time, the new composer balances spacing across multiple lines, resulting in a more visually appealing document.

Additional typography enhancements include support for variable OpenType fonts, allowing users to modify text properties based on size, and automatic detection of text direction in documents, particularly beneficial for languages like Arabic and Hebrew. Calc also auto-sets text direction when right-to-left text is entered.

LibreOffice 26.8 introduces customizable Notebook bar backgrounds, allowing users to differentiate applications easily without needing to restart the application after changing theme colors.

Interoperability remains a focus, with improvements in Calc designed to prevent issues when opening Microsoft Excel files. Notable enhancements include the addition of calculated fields to pivot tables, refined data validation, and a shuffle command to randomize cell order.

Writer has also seen performance upgrades, like faster loading of large documents and a Draft View that minimizes distractions by hiding headers, footers, and margins.

In the graphics applications, Draw and Impress now support multiple page sizes within a single document and allow for better organization of slides into groups.

Notably, LibreOffice remains committed to privacy, explicitly avoiding integrating generative AI features, which ensures that user data does not leave their local machines.

Users can download LibreOffice 26.8 from the official website, which offers builds for various platforms, including DEB packages tailored for Ubuntu. The Snap and Flatpak versions provide automated updates. This latest version is also set to be included in Ubuntu 26.10, slated for release in October.
