BleachBit 6.0.4: Enhanced Scanning Speed and Improved Browser Cleaning Features

BleachBit 6.0.4: Enhanced Scanning Speed and Improved Browser Cleaning Features

A new version of BleachBit, an open-source system cleaning tool, has been released, marking the launch of version 6.0.4. This update enhances the user experience with quicker startup times and scanning speeds for both Windows and Linux users. Notably, this release introduces macOS support for the first time, featuring a Safari cleaner and options for both a Command Line Interface (CLI) and a preliminary Graphical User Interface (GUI).

The 6.0.4 version includes several improvements: new cleaners have been added for tools like Android Studio, Gradle’s cache, and both fish and Zsh shells. Additionally, the Claude cleaner now clears top-level log files and the tool is capable of removing browser "super cookies."

Key Enhancements for Linux Users

The update particularly benefits Linux users with several specific changes:

  • Improved cleaning functionality for the Chromium snap, preventing "over cleaning."
  • Enhanced detection of Firefox profile folders using XDG_CONFIG_HOME, benefiting users who run a Firefox binary alongside a standard install.
  • More accurate disk space detection across various package managers; for instance, Fedora users now receive precise information during DNF operations.
  • Resolved issues include restoring memory wiping functionality under systemd and ensuring that SwapCached is no longer counted as free memory.

Users can download BleachBit from the official website, with options available for all major operating systems, including Deb and AppImage formats for Ubuntu users.

In addition to the maintenance release, BleachBit has made the source code for its original v0.1.0 release from 2008 available on GitHub for historical purposes. This code was previously hosted on SourceForge during the early years of the project.
